![]() Behind Isla Perejil we will find Mount Musa, a promontory of 839 m. An uninhabited islet located in the same strait about 200 meters from the continental coast of Africa and about 8 km northeast of the urban center of the city of Ceuta. Our route continues from Punta Cires to Ceuta passing through Isla Perejil. One passage in spring in a South-North direction towards the breeding areas and another in autumn in a North-South direction after the breeding period. This passage of migratory birds occurs twice a year. It is no coincidence that it is considered one of the best points or “spots” in the world for birdwatching given the large number of species that can be seen great skuas, pomarines, gannets, Cory’s and Balearic shearwaters, fumarels, storm petrels, terns, razorbills, puffins, as well as soaring birds that cross the strait on their migratory routes between Europe and Africa. Undoubtedly another of the great attractions of crossing the Strait of Gibraltar by yacht. It is also possible to frequently see sunfish and tuna, and sometimes even swordfish or hammerhead sharks!Īt the beginning of spring and autumn it is also possible to witness the migration of birds in the Parque Natural del Estrecho. Everything will depend on the time of year in which we are. A place where we can find different species of cetaceans such as common, striped or bottlenose dolphins, pilot whales, sperm whales, fin whales and more sporadically humpback whales, killer whales and gray pilot whales. This is the narrowest point of the Strait of Gibraltar. We depart from the Port of Tarifa towards Punta Cires. In autumn, however, the opposite phenomenon occurs, the birds return from the north to the south. During the spring, groups of gliders return to their places of origin, in Europe, to breed. This is also an area of concentration and return of birds on the crossing of the Strait of Gibraltar: they rest in this place before embarking on their journey by sea. On this visit it is essential to live the experience of climbing the dune and enjoying the view of the entire cove in the background.Īn exceptional natural area, where the abundance of fish and shellfish attract a peculiar mammal that hides in the reeds and reeds on the shore: the otter. The American which believed it was British ![]() ![]() ![]() What do they have to consolidate?"īut, given that rats run through dream mazes that precisely match their lab mazes, others feel that there must be some purpose or meaningful information in dreams. Then again, platypuses experience more REM than any other animal and researchers wonder why, because, as Minnesota's Mahowald puts it, "Platypuses are stupid. Fetuses and babies spend 75 percent of their sleeping time in REM. And there is also evidence that dreaming helps us assimilate memories. Some theories suggest that REM helps regulate body temperature and neurotransmitter levels. "It's never been shown in any species other than a rat." ![]() "Dying from lack of REM is totally bogus," Siegel says. Psychiatrist Jerry Siegel, head of the Center for Sleep Research at the University of California, Los Angeles, recently proved that REM is nonexistent in some big-brained mammals, such as dolphins and whales. Amazingly, even though we spend about 27 years dreaming over the course of an average life, scientists still can't agree on why it's important. (Take away the dreams and, curiously, the depression lifts.) When patients stop the meds, and the vices, they're rewarded with a scary rebound.īut the persistence of REM begs the question: Why is it so insistent? When rats are robbed of REM for four weeks they die (although the cause of death remains unknown). And blood pressure drugs as well as antidepressants are also well known REM suppressants. Of course, REM deprivation, and the subsequent rebound, is common outside the lab. Subjects who were only getting about 25 minutes of REM sleep rated the quality of their dreams between nine and eight on a nine-point scale (one being dull, nine being dynamite). Nielsen also found that dream intensity increased with REM deprivation. In a 2005 study published in Sleep, Nielsen showed that losing 30 minutes of REM one night can lead to a 35 percent REM increase the next night-subjects jumped from 74 minutes of REM to a rebound of 100 minutes. Of course there is non-REM rebound as well, but the brain gives priority to the slow-wave sleep and then to REM, suggesting that the states are independent of each other. ![]() "As soon as you start to rob them of REM, the pressure for them to go back into REM starts to build." Sometimes Nielsen will have to wake them 40 times in one night because they go directly into REM as soon as they are asleep. "We follow the tracing and then when we see moving into REM, we wake them up," says psychologist Tore Nielsen, director of the Dream and Nightmare Lab at the Sacré-Coeur Hospital in Montreal. The only way scientists can study REM deprivation is by torturous sleep deprivation. As the night progresses, however, non-REM stages shorten and the REM periods grow, giving us a 40-minute dreamscape just before waking. A total non-REM–REM cycle is 90 minutes this pattern repeats about five times over the course of a night. Only after 70 minutes of non-REM sleep do we experience our first period of REM, and it lasts only five minutes. Then the brain practically shuts off in stages three and four and shifts into slow-wave sleep, where heart and breathing rates drop dramatically. In stage two the brain slows with only a few bursts of activity. Stage one of non-REM is the nodding off period where one is between sleeping and waking it's sometimes punctuated with a sensation of falling into a hole. Sleep is divided into REM and four stages of non-REM each has a distinct brain wave frequency. Yet, at the same time, our muscles go slack and we lie paralyzed-a toe might wiggle, but essentially we can't move, as if our brain is protecting our bodies from acting out the stories we dream. In this state we dream the most and our brain activity eerily resembles that of waking life. REM refers to "rapid eye movement," the darting of the eyes under closed lids. "When someone is sleep deprived we see greater sleep intensity, meaning greater brain activity during sleep dreaming is definitely increased and likely more vivid," says neurologist Mark Mahowald of the University of Minnesota and director of the Minnesota Regional Sleep Disorders Center in Minneapolis. "Nature's soft nurse," as Shakespeare called sleep, isn't so soft after all. Miss a few from lack of sleep and the brain keeps score, forcing payback soon after eyelids close. If she did sleep a full night, her dreams boomeranged, becoming so vivid that she felt like she wasn't sleeping at all.ĭreams are amazingly persistent. Salem, a new mother, had been breast-feeding her daughter for five months before the croc-attack dream, living on four hours of sleep a night. That's what my dreams were like-vivid, crazy and active," she says. "I imagine that's what it's like when you're on heroin. In a panic, she managed to knock out the crocodile and free herself. The different scenes provide human interaction and also different types of paths and roads a pedestrian could use. In addition, the amount of data is not enough to correctly train a more complex deep learning algorithm.įinally, the Make3D dataset 3 is outdoor and taken from the perspective of a pedestrian. The Middlebury Dataset 7 provides 33 scenes, each filmed from two different exposures. They provide only 6 scenes with complete rooms, which are not ordinary scenes and therefore could not provide good generalizability to the trained models. It only provides static scenes with no interaction, which leads to the scenes provided are being mostly objects. The ground-truth data was captured using an industrial laser scanner which adds precision to the data. Tanks and Temples 6 includes 147791 RGB-D frames in 14 different scenes. Of the 25 scenes, only 9 are outdoor which significantly decreases the number of images. The ground-truth was taken with a highly accurate 3D laser scanner. The ETH3D dataset 4 includes 534 RGB-D frames divided into 25 scenes. The only problem of this dataset is that it was captured from the perspective of a car, so the main view is from the road. This dataset is outdoor, so it fulfills one of our main requisites. The KITTI dataset 5 provides the RGB (stereo pair) and depth maps of 400 different layouts having a total of 1.6 k frames of roads from the city of Karlsruhe (Germany). The second problem is that the dataset is centered on the vision of a car driving in the street, while, in our case, we need the point of view of the pedestrians. The first is that it is a synthetic dataset, meaning that the frames are not photorealistic, with the subsequent problem of testing the system in real conditions. There are two main problems with this dataset.
